I picked up a book by Eve Ensler this year called "Insecure At Last: Losing it Our a Security-Obsessed World" where she reminds us that 'safety' and 'security' are fictions. Danger, mishap, death, accidents - they are part of life. To try avoiding them is not only impossible, it's wasteful of the joy & opportunity & wonder & hope that life has to offer.
I feel like that was a major theme for 2016. Remember, it's all temporary, so enjoy it while it's happening. NOW.
On-stage, my first project of the year was a ‘movement piece’ called SPANX You Very Much. It involved a group of nearly 40 women of all shapes, sizes, and dance levels exploring the way society and we, ourselves, view the female body. It was eye-opening and tons of fun – the company we performed for even had us back later in the year to be part of their annual fundraiser. I also participated in a radio-play version of Leprechaun, with WildClaw this year. Oh, the cheese! Another out-of-the-norm piece I worked on was called The Resistible Rise of Herr Helmut Drumpf, an original work based on a political piece by Bertolt Brecht that took several current election stories to satirical extremes. (and the inaugural production of The Conspirators - look for more from them, fo' sho'.) My roles in this show were Mitt Romney and Chris Christie – talk about ‘against type’ casting!
For fun, Owen and I met for a long weekend in New Orleans and then attended a wedding together in Virginia. Owen even survived a road trip to MI with me to meet family.
Prioritizing me is definitely new, but, boy, do I like it!
